Principal's Message

Dear Members of the St Joseph’s College Family,

Farewell Fr Michael Brady

We held a very special mass on Monday 26 May at the College to celebrate the hard work, dedication and caring of our Parish Priest, Fr Michael Brady, as he retired from his role of twenty-one years.  No doubt many parishioners were present at Fr Michael’s final parish mass on Sunday 25 May at St Joseph’s Catholic Church, just a day after he celebrated his 75th birthday.

Fr Michael has been an incredible supporter of the College, having become Parish Priest in late 2004.  He has been there in word and deed for our most grateful school community: witnessing and celebrating the hundreds of students fortunate enough to have graduated from our fine school, celebrating school masses, attending retreats, providing reconciliation and any number of other duties over two decades, and always in high spirits, exuding good will.

We cannot thank you enough, Fr Michael, for all that you have done for St Joseph’s College, the school community, our staff and students - past and present - and for the greater Tweed area.

In this Jubilee year, our very own Fr Michael Brady is an example to all of what it is to be a Pilgrim of Hope.  And while Fr Michael will always be a part of this school community, when someone leaves their role at the College, we do always say the Irish Blessing:

May the road rise to meet you,
May the wind be always at your back.
May the sun shine warm upon your face,
The rains fall soft upon your fields.
And until we meet again,
May God hold you in the palm of his hand.

Similarly, we share the College Prayer:

Dear Lord,

You chose St Joseph to protect your son.
We ask you through him, to:
Guide us in our daily work,
shield us from all harm
comfort us in our time of need.

Through his example may we find:
sincerity in our endeavours
humility in our achievements
courage in our convictions
wisdom in our decisions
and the peace that is achieved
through just action.

We make this prayer
through Christ our Lord.
Amen.

Saint Joseph, pray for us.

    Principal's Notes

Reminder:  Students Leaving School Early Through the School Day

A quick reminder of the process for when your child is to leave early:

    • Parents/carers are to record the early departure in Compass, by the morning of the departure and no later than 10am.
    • The student is to meet their parent/carer at Parent Reception at the time stipulated and sign out occurs.
    • Due to privacy reasons, paging is very limited, so there will be no paging during the breaks (recess or lunch), and there are to be no calls to the classrooms interrupting lessons to call students to the office.   If your child is leaving early, it is their responsibility to attend the office on time.
    • We understand that emergencies arise, however, most of the recent interruptions and arrangements have been due to a lapse in following procedures.  Therefore, some forward planning from home will lessen the current impact at the College and allow student focus to remain on learning.

    Your support is appreciated.

    Afternoon Learning Hub

A reminder that our Afternoon Learning Hub operates from 3:15pm to 5pm in the College Library from Tuesdays to Thursdays only.

      Ignite Conference '25: Thursday

To give you some background on the Ignite Conference, we include today the organiser's own explanation:

Since 2001, Ignite conference has been the passion project of a small group of people who carried a vision for what a gathering of faithful Catholics and the unchurched would look like.  With Brisbane's Emmanuel Community as their foundation, the ministries that have sprung up since the beginning of the Conference are vital to making it happen.

Every year, Ignite Youth hosts one of Australia’s most powerful Catholic youth conferences.  Ignite Conference draws together a network of high schoolers, young adults, ministry leaders, families, teachers, priests and religious from around the country, sending them out with a passion for mission and authentic faith in Jesus.

Experience four days of real-world formation, encouragement in faith, great people and powerful worship.

Interested students will need to speak to a member of the Mission Team to register soon.  Registrations close on the last day of term, Wednesday 2 July 2025.

      Student Engagement and Application Reports

St Joseph’s College provides Student Engagement and Application Reports (SEAAR) periodically throughout the year.  SEAAR is a system that monitors and acknowledges students' individual effort and application in each subject.  Scores are based on each student’s effort in completing classwork and homework to the best of their ability; being punctual and organised for class; and behaviour in the learning environment.  SEAAR Cycle 3 was released on Friday 30 May.  If you have not already done so, please visit Compass to access and view your child’s SEAAR and have a conversation with them regarding areas of strength and areas for growth.

Please note that those students who receive a ‘Gold SEAAR’ across all cycles throughout the year will be invited to attend the Rewards Day at Wet ‘n’ Wild at the end of the year.

Congratulations to the students below who received a perfect SEAAR average of 5.0 for Cycle 3:

      Mr Eamon Brown
      Assistant Principal - Mission

Assistant Principal - Learning and Teaching

It is fair to say that learning has been in full swing this term, with students and staff catching up on time lost last term and everyone settling into a busy and productive routine. Assessment schedules are well underway, with 49 tasks completed so far and another 52 to come (excluding the Year 7-10 assessment block—see below).

Excursions have provided students with diverse learning experiences, ranging from Brisbane’s law courts and the Queensland Museum to our local rocky shores.  Additionally, 1,963 parent-teacher conferences were conducted, allowing staff to meet with students and their parents to reflect on the semester’s challenges and successes and to set learning goals for the future.

English and Maths are well into the new curriculum, while most other KLAs are in the planning or early implementation phases as the biggest curriculum change in decades unfolds across NSW schools.  Amid all this, regular classroom teaching at SJC continues to focus on the explicit teaching of core literacy skills in reading and writing.  With so much happening, I’m sure everyone appreciated the recent long weekend!

These final weeks of term lead us to the conclusion of Semester 1.  For students in Years 7-10, this means many assessments.  Please read on for important information to help your child prepare for their end-of-semester tasks.

      Trial HSC

Year 12 students will begin their Trial HSC examinations on Monday, August 4, 2025.  These exams closely replicate the final HSC exams, covering all course units and topics.  The trials are conducted under exam conditions in our COLA and provide the best indication of what the final exam experience will be like.  Preparation is key to success.

Our HSC teachers have been working with students to set goals, revise concepts, and practice targeted skills such as multiple-choice techniques (e.g., spotting distractors) and addressing key verbs in questions.  It is crucial that study be active rather than passive: simply reading notes is not enough.

Students should actively summarise and condense notes, practice sample questions, and review feedback from previous tasks.  Past HSC questions and sample answers, as well as a multiple-choice quiz generator, are available and should be used regularly.  Students are encouraged to submit practice responses to teachers for feedback.  Effective study also involves timing: shorter, focused sessions (two 50-minute blocks with a 10-minute break) are more productive than a single two-hour session.

Stage 4 and 5 Assessment Block

All students in Years 7-10 will sit formal assessments during Weeks 9 and 10.  Mr Hall recently shared each year group’s timetable via Compass to help students prepare.  Like their senior peers, junior and middle school students should prepare by reading, summarising, condensing notes, completing practice questions, and reflecting on prior feedback.  The recent parent-teacher interviews should have provided useful guidance on individual preparation needs.

      Reports

Year 11 and 12 mid-course reports have already been released and are accessible via Compass.  Year 7-10 Semester 1 reports will be released early next term.  For Years 8 and 10, reports will be available before the subject selection information night, giving students and parents a clear view of academic progress.

Stage 6 Mid-Course Academic Excellence Awards

It was a pleasure to acknowledge the hard work and achievements of many Stage 6 students at our Week 6 assembly, which you will have read in the Principal’s message in today’s newsletter.

Mr Hall presented dozens of awards, celebrating students whose dedication and discipline continue to yield success in the classroom.  We congratulate all recipients on their outstanding efforts.

      Year 8 Writing Goals

Our Learning Collaborative team is focused on strategies to improve literacy across the College. One exciting initiative involves goal-setting with Year 8 students.

By term’s end, all Year 8 students will have a one-on-one interview with a senior staff member to discuss their writing progress, review evidence against the National Literacy Progressions, and set a goal to advance their skills.  Parents will be notified of these goals via Compass to support their child’s ongoing development.  The AWC teacher will also be informed to provide daily support.

Goal-setting is proven to enhance focus, self-discipline, and accountability.  With your support, we are confident we can continue to grow our students’ literacy skills and expand their future opportunities.

Stage 5 and 6 Subject Selection – Save the Date: Monday, 28 July, 2025

Early in Semester 2, students in Years 8, 9, and 10 will select subjects for the 2026 academic year.  The Year 8 and 10 subject selection information night will be held at the College on Monday, 28 July.  Mr Hall will provide more information early in Term 3.  Meanwhile, it is a great time to discuss with your child their strengths, interests, and preferences both in and out of the classroom.  Reflecting on these will help narrow down choices before formal selections are made.

As always, if you have any questions about your child’s progress, please contact their classroom teacher by phone or email.  You are also welcome to call me anytime to discuss their learning.

School Vaccination Program and Dates for 2025 - Change of date for the Year 10 Vaccinations

In previous newsletters and Compass alerts, SJC families are provided with information regarding the NSW Health offer of the vaccines recommended for school-aged children by the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) annually in a school vaccination program.

As parents and carers of a Year 10 student would be aware, this year's scheduled Meningococcal ACWY (in a single dose) vaccination was due to take place this coming Thursday, 12 June.

Please be advised that this has been postponed, and will now take place on Thursday 24 July (Week 1, Term 3).

As always, parental/guardian consent must be provided for a vaccination to take place at school, ie. if you do not provide consent, then no vaccination will take place.  More information about the program – and to provide online consent – can be found HERE at the NSW Health website.

Girls in Flight: Exploring Drones and STEAM with Surf Life Saving 🚁🌊💡

Students from Years 7 and 8 recently took part in an exciting drone workshop led by Beau Monks from Surf Life Saving Australia.  A registered UAV (un-crewed aerial vehicle) pilot, Beau ran a dynamic session exploring how drone technology is used in real-world problem solving, from beach safety and emergency response to search and rescue and environmental monitoring. 🧭🌧️🌍

The workshop introduced students to She Maps, a program designed to encourage girls to pursue careers in STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, the Arts and Mathematics). 👩‍🔬🔬🎨💻  Beau also spoke about the current gender imbalance in the drone industry, with only 5% of UAV pilots in Australia identifying as female.  This sparked important conversations around gender stereotypes, unconscious bias and the importance of diverse voices in tech fields.

Students took part in a hands-on drone challenge where they learned about safety protocols, manual flying and data reporting.  Working in teams, they flew drones through obstacle courses—some even managing impressive flips and precise landings.

The session also included a coding mission simulating aerial surveillance during heavy rain, with students programming drones to identify potential flood zones.  This required careful planning, critical thinking and teamwork.

It was a fantastic day of learning, skill-building and inspiration—empowering the next generation to think big and fly high. ✨🚀👏

      Drama

Earlier in Term 2, Year 12 Drama travelled to Emmanuel College to participate in HSC Drama workshops.  The workshops focused on group devised theatre and voice and movement in performance.  Attending this workshop provided our students with the opportunity to create, perform, and appreciate dynamic and meaningful theatre.  We wish our Drama students every success in the up and coming HSC performance exam.

      Music

Last term, the St Joe’s CAPA department put out a call inviting any student who sings or can play an instrument to join a new project involving building a school band.

Around twenty students responded to the call, and began turning up every Thursday to rehearse under the guidance and conducting of instrumental teacher, Ms Felicity Moran, and St Joe’s Music Teacher, Ms Helen Bub-Connor.

These students who consist of singers, bass players, drummers, piano players, woodwind players, guitarists, have been steadfast in their commitment to turning up on time and rehearsing.  They have also shown they are willing to put in the self discipline of practicing, listening, as well as setting up and packing up each rehearsal.  Their consistency and enthusiasm has delivered remarkable results in a short space of time, already nailing three songs in roughly ten rehearsals, and ready to start on their next.

We are hoping to share a ‘public’ performance soon, so stay tuned for when we release our debut performance date!

      Visual Arts

Congratulations to all our students on their enthusiasm with their learning in the creative and performing arts at St Joseph's College.  Today, we share with you, the work of one of our students.

I started drawing comics when I was in primary school.  One of the books I was reading “Captain Underpants” the two main characters in the book drew comics, printed out copies and gave them away to their students to brighten their day.  These stories inspired me to write and draw my own comics.

My Visual Design Individual Project is a comic about three dwarfs who go on an adventure through the mountains to stop an evil threat from arising.  I am currently writing the story and creating different characters this term.  I hope I can finish this project in time and I look forward to displaying it in the art show towards the end of the year.

      Resource Centre News

This week, the Resource Centre is proud to spotlight National Reconciliation Week 2025, which runs from May 27 to June 3.  This year's theme is "Bridging Now to The Next."  This important week encourages us all to reflect on our shared history and take meaningful steps toward a more united and respectful future.  As part of our Reconciliation Week focus, we are showcasing the outstanding work of our Year 12 Aboriginal Studies students.  Their assignments are currently on display in the Resource Centre.  We encourage everyone to take a moment to view these thoughtful projects that highlight the strength and resilience of First Nations communities.

In addition to these displays, we've noticed a growing interest in the works of authors Jack Heath and Anthony Horowitz. Their thrilling novels—filled with mystery, suspense, and action—have been flying off the shelves.  Popular titles like The Cut Out, 400 Minutes of Danger, Stormbreaker, and the Alex Rider series are in high demand.  Be sure to visit the Resource Centre this week.  Whether you're here to learn more about reconciliation or get lost in a gripping novel, there’s something for everyone.

      Titans Netball Challenge

On Thursday 22 May, three SJC netball teams competed at Carrara in the Titans Netball Challenge.  For most of the 7/8 girls, this was their first time representing SJC in netball.  They played teams such as Lindisfarne, Hillcrest College, Loganlea State High School, Robina State High School and PBC.  The maroon team showed determination and excellent teamwork throughout the competition.  The team played a total of six games, winning four and losing two.  Despite the two losses, they remained focused and continued to improve with each game.  Their perseverance paid off as they won their final match finishing in third place in the competition  The white team, having had lesson time playing together, showed great perseverance and adaptability as well, with some girls playing out of their usual positions.  They had two wins and three losses in their pool but were victorious in the playoffs against Tamborine Mountain State.

The Year 9/10 girls had a fantastic day competing against two Lindisfarne teams, Hillcrest, Brisbane Christian, Loganlea and Marsden.  The team played consistently well throughout the day, winning five out of six games.  Their teamwork was especially impressive when one of our shooters was injured partway through the day.  The girls showed outstanding teamwork and adaptability, adjusting seamlessly and continuing to perform with confidence and skill.

      Titans Fast 5 Netball Competition

On Friday 30 May, three SJC netball teams competed at Ballina in the Senior Mixed Fast 5 Netball Competition.  They played teams from Grafton through to Kingscliff in very wet, difficult conditions.

The Maroon team (Year 11) won two, lost two and drew one, which resulted in 3rd in Pool A.

The White team (Year 11) won three, lost one and had a bye, which resulted in 2nd in Pool C.

The grey team (Year 12) won three, lost one and had a bye, which resulted in 1st in Pool D.

It was an incredible effort by all, especially given the conditions, but it was Darcy Brotherton and Liam Reilly who were standouts among the males for their skill.  Lily Bushell, Jorjie Abric and Lily Pinkerton were also consistent in lifting their teams, but Makayla was especially impressive scoring the only six pointer for the day, among a couple of other three points in the last game.

Additionally, we thank Piper Veitch, Grace O’Connor and Ruby Everingham for their service as they umpired various games on the day.
